Get to know the players from the Melbourne Mavericks

We asked three Melbourne Mavericks netball players all about their routines, inspirations, game day rituals, and favourite travel essentials.

1. Tell us about your journey into netball? When did you first fall in love with it?

Amy P: About 14 or 15. Bit of a late starter but found my happy place!

Jessie G: My older sister played and I wanted to be just like her.

Uneeq P: Started up in club netball, I wasn’t very coordinated, but I fell in love with it when I joined Rep netball for Westside Saints – made so many friends in that club.

2. What does a typical day in your training or competition schedule look like?

Amy P: 7:30 / 8 am start, training prep, preview, court, gym!

Jessie G: training, gym, coffees, sleeping, eating.

Uneeq P: For training – the night before I’ll get my training gear ready. For game day – I’ll get my stuff ready the day of, nothing special.

3. Do you have a pregame superstition or ritual?

Amy P: Not really.

Jessie G: Pre-game coffee.

Uneeq P: None actually, besides just praying over myself and team.

4. Who has had the biggest influence on your career so far?

Amy P: Richo.

Jessie G: My dad.

Uneeq P: Darren Abella, was my Rep Coach. He could see my potential at making it in this league ever since I was uncoordinated and young (lol).

5. What's been your proudest on-court moment?

Amy P: Debuting for Diamonds.

Jessie G: SSN debut.

Uneeq P: Being able to represent Tonga in the world cup – not only with my idol (Catherine Tuivaiti) but also my sister.

6. How do you look after your mental well-being on and off the court?

Amy P: Summer in winter, walks along bay, coffee with friends.

Jessie G: Spending time with friends.

Uneeq P: Listening to music, spending time with friends and family and journalling.

Amy P: Enjoy the process of becoming great!

Jessie G: Chase opportunity and have fun. Work out who you are outside of netball.

Uneeq P: Never stop the hard work especially behind the scenes work – that’s when it all adds up. Also, surround yourself with people who uplift you!

8. What's the biggest challenge you've overcome in your career so far? How did you overcome it?

Amy P: Non-selection … remembering my “why” and controllables.

Jessie G: Self-doubt - lean on the people around you.

Uneeq P: Not being picked for a team/feeling overlooked. The people around me helped uplift me and never give up.

9. Three words your team would use to describe you.

Amy P: Chaotic, humble, ruthless.

Jessie G: Chatty, stubborn, fun.

Uneeq P: Funny, energetic and thoughtful.
